Mike
Smith excelled in football, basketball and baseball. He is being inducted
into the Hall of Fame for his "aerial attack" as a quarterback
for the Bulldogs.
The
Beacon Evening News called Mike the next "Joe Namath" for
his 6'4", 210 pound frame and his ability to throw the football.
During Mike's three years as quarterback, he shattered all Beacon
High School passing records, including 3,910 career passing yards
and 39 touchdown passes.
He
capped his illustrious football career by throwing for 1,397 yards
in his senior year, including 19 touchdown passes. His most prolific
outings that year came against Spackenkill and Walter Panas, firing
5 touchdown passes against each of them. Mike quarterbacked the Bulldogs
to a 6-3 record, which included a 26-24 loss to Poughkeepsie in the
league championship game.
Mike
was All-League, All-County, and All-Section for three years. As a
senior he earned All-State Honors.
