At the conclusion of Third Grade, students will be able to:

  1. Identify equipment and procedures using appropriate technology terms (keyboard, monitor, mouse, cursor, scroll, open, menu bar, program, maximize, minimize, link) and demonstrate familiarity with the basic functions of each designated technology term.
  2. Utilize a basic word processing program, developing awareness of two-handed keyboarding skill; format capabilities (font and text size); saving and retrieving files; use of menu options (cut and paste, thesaurus, etc.).
  3. Use draw and paint tools for self expression, building dexterity, and use in class projects.
  4. Understand safety rules regarding electricity, proper handling of hardware and CD-ROMs, proper procedures for signing on and off.
  5. Begin awareness of electronic communication and network possibilities through teacher demonstration and modeling.

At the conclusion of Fifth Grade, building upon prior achievements, students will be able to:

  1. Expand appropriate use of technology terms as the student develops new software program capabilities, including on-line resources (e.g. search engines, keywords, Boolean searching, bookmarks, "print preview").
  2. Demonstrate how to cite on-line sources properly when such information is used in school projects.
  3. Increase proficiency of two-handed word processing. (Proficiency Goal = 12 Words per minute with 85+% Accuracy). Use appropriate function keys (e.g. F1 = Help). Be able to save and retrieve from disks.
  4. Create a multimedia presentation with teacher assistance, which incorporates moving, copying and exporting graphics and text between programs.

  4. Learn how to evaluate information from electronic databases and communities; demonstrating the ability to make judgements about relevance/irrelevance, accuracy/inaccuracy, opinions vs. facts, and varying points of view on topics being studied.

At the conclusion of Twelfth Grade, building upon prior achievements, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a cumulative awareness of a variety of technologies through the independent creation of a research-based project. Project quality should include proficient use of word processing and/or desktop publishing, file management, and on-line research.
  2. Demonstrate increasing proficiency of two-handed word processing and other input devices. (Commencement Proficiency Goal = 30 Words per minute with 85+% Accuracy).
